End of week...

Well, it is the end of week 5 that I have been off work. What have I done? Doesn't really seem like much. Amazing how time goes by so fast!!! Really though, I have been able to spend lots of time with Tyler. He has been getting off the bus everyday and we usually have close to 2 hrs before Todd gets home. I have really enjoyed that. From 2-3pm, I find myself going a little stir crazy. I know I will miss the time when I get back to work!!!

I have *tried* to be a decent home person. Todd has not had to do ANY laundry or ANY dishes. I have even had dinner ready when he walks in the door. I have taken the time off to get ready for a huge area consignment sale, our neighborhood garage sale and a local scrapbook yard sale. I have gutted 2 closets and the garage. I even cleaned the lazy susan-which had spices with expiration dates of 04! LOL.

What else, I took Ty to the doctor today because I was a little worried about his height and weight. According to the dr, he is fine~weighing in at 51 lbs and 47 inches. Hopefully with shoes on he will be 48 inches for our upcoming disney trip. I really believe he is just going to be a "little" kid.

Today is my dads birthday. So Happy Birthday Dad! I think he is the only one who is still reading this blog....LOL

I will post again after this weekend. Thanks to all.

Major Update--

Once again, I am way far behind on updating everyone. I debated deleting but many family members said they enjoy reading it every now and again. So for now, it will stay. I will give everyone a "brief" update on each of us

TODD-he is doing so well and life really is back to normal, or as normal gets. I said in the last post that he was golfing regularly, working normal 40 hour work week and doing stuff around the house-yes, he is mowing the yard again!!! He is still at VF Outlet and is close to celebrating 10 years of employment. As far as the tumor goes, he will go for a scan in January. His vision is good and so is the slight paralysis. Now if we could just get his facial features back in place. I tease him that people pay alot of money, meaning Botox, to have the tightness that he has.

KIM-I have had the most change in the last few months. Thing went down hill very fast at the "Sweet Treat" place, I was basically let go a few weeks ago. Most definitely a huge blessing in disguise. I have had a few weeks off of work to get things done around the house and do some "playing". I had 2 job offers, 1 back in the mall and 1 outside of my degree. I went with the outside of my degree!!! My new path is about to begin. This job is M-F and NORMAL hours. I will update all once things are underway!

TYLER-Tyler started 3rd grade this year and is doing very well! He is so darn cute but he keeps us on our toes. He started playing fall baseball but he is not happy with his team, as he has moved up to another league and he is the "new man on the totem pole." He keeps asking if he has to finish the season and every time my answer is NO! My heart goes out for him. He told us that he does not want to play in the spring so we will wait and see. Not sure what the next sport is....he wants to try basketball.

We are going on Fall Break to Disney World on the 18th of October. I can't wait and neither can Ty but Todd could care less. Tyler finally reached 48" so now he can ride the "big" kid rides. I will post a pic of last weekend when we went to Dollywood and he was tall enough! This picture is a HOOT!!!

Anywho, there is the update! I will try and do better.

UPDATE

Well, Well, Well.....I am way behind in any update but I will try to catch everyone up-not sure who reads this still, except my Dad.

Todd is doing very well these days. He is almost back to 100% normal. He feel's GREAT and is acting that way! Todd's last Florida visit showed that the swelling had decreased. It did not show any signs of shrinking but Dr. Malyapa said he could definitely see less swelling. Dr. M told Todd that the decrease in swelling was the main reason he was feeling good. We don't care what it is, we just know that he is feeling good. Todd's been golfing in the ,95+ heat and getting up at 5:30 to golf so we know that things are better :). Now if I could just get him to mow the yard. HEHE

My new job is going very well. It has finally settled down and systems are in place. I am confident that I made a good change. The owners are really great people and support me in all daily life challenges. The flexibility has been wonderful. Tyler is happy because I am going to try and only make him go to after school care 3 days a week-working true mall retail I would never be able to attempt that!

Thats about it. We are all doing well and Tyler is growing like a weed!!! Thanks for everyone's prayers and keep continuing to say them!

I am so Out of Date

Sorry for the incredible delay in updating on life. I had all intentions of posting pictures since me and Tyler went to Pennsylvania for Memorial Day weekend. We had a great time and Aunt Nancy had a big party. I think there were over 25 people who showed up. We had a blast. Todd stayed home because he was leaving the next day for Orlando to attend a business meeting. Fast Foward.....

The switched has finally clicked and Todd is feeling just about back to normal. I think for the past 2 weeks he has actually felt GOOD. He seems so much happier and has much more energy. Todd has been golfing as much as he can and you know he must be feeling better if he got up at 5 AM to GOLF! Last week we went to Dollywood and he did not need a motorized scooter. He walked the entire park 2-3 times. At the very end, he sat down and waited for Tyler and I but we had been walking for 4 hours and it was hot. I was so proud of him and he mentioned to me that his leg was "walking" better, not much of a drag. I pray every night that he will continue to improve. He goes on Friday to see Dr. Malyapa for his 2 month check up but since we know the results from Dr. Wiseman, I will be staying here. I will go for the final read in August. Keep up with your prayers!

The Cupcakery is FINALLY open and I am officially in my new location. I am having a great time figuring out the cupcake world. There definitely are some challenges but all new stores have "quirks" that have to be worked out. I am along for the ride and I will take one day at a time.

Thanks for everyone's support. Todd's mom started Chemo today in PA for the liver and lung cancer. We can't catch a break!!! When I know some news on her, I will update.

I have lots of pics to upload so when I get a few minutes, I will load them. If I haven't said it once, I will say it again. Keep praying for Todd. Prayers are definitely helping.

Update after Dr's Appointment

Todd and I met with this Knoxville DR the Neurologist on Friday. (The Florida DR-Dr. Malaypa told us that we would more than like not see any change until the 4 Month visit) Dr. Wiseman told us that the scan was STABLE and showed no change. We knew that it was supposed to look like that but deep down, I was hoping for something. Dr. Wiseman who has NEVER had a case like Todd's cautioned us not to get our hopes too high about the Proton Therapy eliminating the tumor. On the other hand, Dr. Malaypa told us that eliminating the tumor was our ultimate goal. HUMMMM, you just hope and pray. It is out of our hands so maybe God will give us good results by the next visit. Dr. Wiseman gave Todd a medicine for nausea as Todd has had an upset stomach for 3 weeks. I am very thankful that he did not put him back on steroids-he said he could not see much swelling. Keep praying! I appreciate everyone who is!!!

The Cold bug

So when your immune system is down, it does not respond to a cold very well. That's the new ailment!!! Todd caught a cold that I had last week and it has just kicked him in the butt. He goes to work and then comes home and goes straight to bed. He also said his stomach is upset. When will that guy get a break? He had 2-3 days last week where he felt good and thats it!!!

I started my new job on Monday and really like it! Of course, my store does not open till the first week of June so this month is all about marketing. I know that once my location opens, I will be busy busy busy. Juggling everything is difficult because I have had little help from Todd. I have even been *trying* to mow the yard-it's not pretty!!! Once he gets back to his good old self, I will have him helping out!

We have a busy rest of the week planned. Tyler is in a baseball tournament starting Friday. We are doing the Juvenile Diabetes walk-walking with baseball team bc one of the boys has Diabetes- on Saturday morning, baseball Sat afternoon and then Mother's Day and baseball on Sunday. We are going to try and eat lunch with my mom on Sunday and then swing by and see the Bloomfield's. I guess Mothers Day for me is being with my family because there is not going to be much "ME" time. Wouldn't want it any other way!!! Happy early Mothers Day to everyone. Keep praying for Todd, he had a scan done yesterday and we go to Knox Dr on Friday. Will update after that.

Family Update

Todd is FINALLY feeling a little bit better. I think it was Thursday where I could see the change in personality and attitude. I am so thankful that maybe we are heading down the right track!!!

Last night was my last day at the GAP! I had mixed emotions as I walked out the door. I know this new challenge of cupcakes will be a good one. I am off today but start with The Cupcakery on Monday morning.

Todd's mom has been diagnosed with liver cancer now, in addition to lung and bone so PLEASE add a prayer for her. She is going to visit 2 other centers for second opinions. I talked to her this week and she was really positive so....Can this family take any more grief? As soon as I know more, I will update everyone. Thanks and keep praying.

Follow-up to Blood work visit

Todd called Dr. Malyapa to ask about his cold chills. He told Todd that it sounded like a urinary tract infection so off to the after hours clinic Todd went. While at the after hours clinic, the Dr told Todd that all his blood work came back normal. He did a few more tests and did a complete check up and said that he could not find anything wrong. So now we go almost day 10 of Todd not feeling well. I tell him everyday that I hopes he feels better and hopefully things will turn around. It is hard to stay positive for all of us when nothing is changing!!! I will keep my chin up, Todd has a scan on Tuesday and Dr. Wiseman, here in Knoxville will read it and share results with us on June 9th. Keep your fingers crossed.

Brain Tumor/Cancer Resource Links

So, I had to do a lot of my own research when it came to finding any assistance or help. I thought I would compile it and post it in one location. Hopefully someone will find it and it will be useful to them without going thru all the rig-a-ma-roo I went thru.

For Brain Tumor Support Check out BTS Cares-will help with financial support

American Cancer SocietyMake sure to call your local branch and the 800#. I was able to get support from both the Tennessee chapter and the Florida chapter.

Cancer CareWill provide support for patients diagnosed with any type of cancer. They also have grants to apply for.

Kelly Heinz-Grundner FoundationThis non profit help with brain tumor patients but is limited to helping patients living in Michigan, Western New York and Delaware

This next one is for help with Air fare-none of this worked for us but.....you never know. There are 4 organizations that I called. The first 2 will direct you to your area and the last one is Southwest Air.

Air Care

National Patient Travel Center

Corporate TravelI thought this one was neat! You would fill empty seats on corporate jets. I believe you have to put your name on the list and wait for them to call you.

Southwest AirlinesI can't find the actual link to their charity site. You have to fill out a form and then they call you and discuss travel plans. They will do one roundtrip ticket per calendar year. I did find this number for charity, 214-792-1300. I also believe that Delta will do a roundtrip ticket as well, you just have to make a few phone calls.

I sure hope this helps someone out there. We received assistance from ACS, Cancer Care and Brain Tumor Society. You just have to stay persistent!!! Send me a comment if you have any questions.

Easter Sunday-March 2008

Since I am updating the blog with pictures, I might as well add Easter Sunday. Our tradition for the past 3 years is to go to my friend Amy's house. We do an easter egg hunt, open baskets and enjoy a big lunch. Tyler looks forward to this day as he gets lots of candy and money. :)

This last picture is a pic of Amy's 2 girls, Gracey on the left and Abby on the right. Of course, Tyler is in the center. These kids clean up pretty nice!!!

Tyler and Spring Baseball 08

Just a couple of pictures to Tyler and his team. He is playing for the Fountain City Rockies. He played T-ball with this team, left for a full season and then returned to play coach pitch. We love his coach, Jeff. Actually, all the coaches and helpers are so great! Everyone's motto is that the boys have fun (learn a little too)!!!

Tyler is the far one on the left. Tyler, Daniel, Austin and Tucker.

What teamwork!! Jeff gives a great rally at the end of each game-win or lose. I think this is a great picture of the team-not sure where Tyler is but....

Back to the HOHUMS around here :(

Just when Todd gets feeling better he gets the "bug." Not sure what is wrong with him but he just is not feeling well again. Now, he did start back to work this week so maybe it is just his body telling him he is doing too much. The new ailment is that he is cold in the evenings. I shut the air off in the house earlier in the week and at one point the house reached 78* and he had a blanket wrapped around him!!! What is worse is that he has our heavy winter blanket on in bed at night. Oh my gosh, it's killing me! Todd visited his general physician on Friday where they drew blood. Hopefully the results will be back on Monday.

Just when I think things are back on track we take 3 steps backwards. Tyler had baseball 3x this week and Todd had to sit out on helping because he "just doesn't feel well." I feel sorry and sad for him. We were hoping that treatment would help things and so far conditions have not changed. Only time will tell! Keep praying for him.

Back to work.

Todd went back to work today and everything went great! The "girls" had a surprise welcome back party for him. They did a potluck lunch and made a banner. I think he was very excited that they were happy to have him back!

Nothing else is new around here. Todd went golfing several times last week. I think his energy is finally getting close to normal. I do know that he was exhausted after doing so but he still had the energy to go golfing....one step at a time. I will keep you posted if anything changes. Thanks everyone!

Prayer Request for my "new" friend.

I have made a new friend over the past 2 days. She found me as she was looking for info on the Proton Center and Dr. Malyapa. Her name is Christa and her husband is Ron. They have 3 kids and he has a rare tumor behind his nose. I will post a portion of her email to me.

The tumor is in the clivus bone, which is directly behing the sinus cavity that lies behind the nose. It butts up to the brain and sits between the two corrated arteries. Ron had been having extreme sinus prblems for a bout 3 months (he couldn't hear out of either of his ears), so they decided to do a CT of his sinus cavities. They called us the next morning and told us they found a "growth" in the clivus bone and had to do an MRI for a better look. They confirmed it with an MRI and he had to go in for Biopsy surgery and while he was there they put tubes in his ears to drain the fluid. The biopsy procedure took almost 6 hours becasue of where it is located. They determined it was Clival Chordoma which is a slow growing form of cancer, though they didn't find any actual cancer cells in his tumor, the patholgy showed it was Chordoma. The good thing is, becasue they found it so early, it is still actually small enough where they can do the Proton Radiation becasue it is contained in the bone still. Although this is slow growing, it will eventually grow into the surrounding areas. It is in a really bad place becasue of all th vital organs and tissues which surround it. There is no guarantee that the radiation will actually stop growth of the tumor, but it is a good chance. This condition he has is pretty rare and they don't have a lot of good research on it.

I know what type of journey she is about to begin and she has 3 kiddos to take care of as well. We are going to keep in touch. Please add her and her family to your prayers-she could use anything and everything. Their appointment at the Proton Center is on Wednesday.

Well, I am leaving the GAP.

I am officially leaving the Gap/Gapkids after 5 years. It is time for a new chapter in this book! Too many signs kept popping up so I knew I needed to start looking. I just did not plan on it happening so soon. Hope everyone is sitting down because when I tell you where I am going you are going to say HUM.....LOL

I am going to run a new store coming to Knoxville called The Cupcakery. It opens in June and it is a bakery that sells CUPCAKES. I am so excited. I was nervous when I made the decision but you have to take chances in life. This job is going to be so much better for our family life-no late nights, very short Saturday and NOTHING on Sunday and Monday.

Wish me luck, I am at the Gap until the end of April. I will start with them in May doing odds and ends, like marketing and then the store opens in June. So if you are hungry, stop on by!!

Christa Masters!!!

Hi Christa, I created another email account so email me at FloridaProtonInfo@gmail.com-I did not want to post our regular email addy for the entire world to see. :) Once I get the email from you, I will send all the info I have come up with. Look forward to speaking with you. Kim

Reply to last 2 comments

Donna-Silver Point is about 1 1/2-2 hrs from here. It is basically in the middle of nowhere...LOL. Our guess is someone from Bonnie's church or a friend of a friend thru Todd's work. Thanks for trying to help us figure out the puzzle. LOL.

The anonymous person on one of the last posts-Your sick!! I can not believe you would say something like that!

Once again, Thanks to EVERYONE who has been positive and who prays for us on a daily basis. Keep up the good thoughts, not negative like the last person! Thanks all!!!

Who is the Silver Point Person? Please let us know :)

Ok, I am dying to know who this person is. Who ever this person is checks every day!!! I have googled that area and we know NO ONE in that area. Now my regular "blog" checkers are asking if I have found out and I have NO CLUE!!!! Silver Point person, drop me an email or leave a comment-any hint would be great!

Back on the "Pill" again and it is not ME...LOL

Like I said last week, Todd was going to completely come off of the steroids on Tuesday. Tuesday went great and then today, Wednesday, Todd woke up with a pounding headache and an upset stomach. So, back on a small dose of steroids. I am not sure what the next step for him is with this crazy pill!

How many times can I say that we are ready for this to end? I just want things to go away and our lives not be consumed with "brain tumor" stuff! Talking to someone at the store today made me sit and realize that no matter how bad things seem at our house, that someone out there has it much more worse. Bottom line, we just need to appreciate those around us and make sure they know we care!

Will update after the weekend. Keep prayers coming!

Weekly Update

I think this week has gone Great for Todd. I have noticed a difference in his energy level and attitude. On Tuesday, he cut back his dose of steroids. I was concerned that he would not feel too well and also have headaches but so far so good!!! Next week, he is going to come off them all the way so we will see-fingers crossed!

Nothing else new-which is good!!! We are still getting cards and we/he appreciates them a bunch! Keep the prayers coming, the waiting game of the test results will drive us crazy until we get them. I think I said before, Todd goes back at the end of May for check up #1 and then the end of June for the scan that should show a change. Fingers crossed.

I am way behind on updating pictures but when life settles down, I will update the blog with pictures. Thanks everyone!!!

We are all home!!

It is official, we are all home together for good!!! Thanks to everyone who kept us on your prayer list. Please continue to do so, we still have a few months before any results.

According to Dr. Malyapa, Todd will have a scan after 2 months and then again at 4 months. He told Todd that the first scan usually yields little results but the second scan is where they will see the results. So...4 more months to go!!!

Todd will be off work until April 21st. I think he needs that extra time to get feeling better. He ear is still clogged-being told because of inflamation, his energy level is so low, he is bloated from the steroid, and lastly, he is missing a few patches of hair. With all that going on, I think a month will be good for him.

I will update every few days now as not as much is going on. Thanks to everyone who is keeping us in thoughts and prayers.

Gantry is Fixed

Todd got his treatment today. YEAH!!! So as long as tomorrow goes as planned, we will be on the road to HOME hopefully by 10 am or so.

The Gantry/Machine is Broken!

2 treatments left and the Gantry is BROKEN!!! Todd just called and he is waiting for it to be fixed. Apparently, it has been broken all weekend and they have been working on it. I need everyone to say a quick prayer that it gets up and running because tomorrow is his last treatment and we go home! If it does not get fixed today, then we go to Wednesday! I will keep you updated.

Long Overdue Update

For my daily followers, I am sorry for not a recent update. :) Sit tight, I have alot to say!

Todd woke up on Wednesday with a clogged ear, not any pain, just clogged. He saw Dr. Malyapa who prescribed him an antibiotic but said it was not an infection. HUM? He was hoping it was not permanent hearing loss but thankfully it does not seem to be the case. As of today, Friday, he said he ear is feeling a smidge better. We/He sure does not need another ailment.

On the past Sunday, we talked about what we were going to do our last weekend in Jacksonville-Tyler and are are arriving Friday and bringing Todd home on Tuesday. I really wanted to do either SeaWorld or use the rest of our Disney passes. I priced SeaWorld and it was going to be $194 just for the 3 of us for TICKETS!!! WOW! I spoke with my mall friend, Apple Todd, and he said he had a good friend that worked at a high end resort in Orlando. A few emails and we had FREE tickets for Sunday. I rented Todd a scooter so he should be in good shape and be able to conserve his energy. NEXT, a last thought was to look into the Nick Hotel. Ok, so the price for 1 night was $339. Granted, it is supposed to be great fun for the kids but YIKES!!! We knew that we could not spend that much money for a 1 night stay. Todd's friend Steve-Orlando friend- reminded him that Nick Hotel was a Holiday Inn property and he had "points." We called and used our "points" so the night was FREE!!! This should be a GREAT last weekend. Todd will be beat when this is all said and done.

Lastly, Tyler and I were going to *try* and catch flight out of Knoxville going thru Atlanta to Jacksonville. Well.....we got to the Delta counter and the lady told me because of the bad weather in Atlanta, apparently they had tornadoes that there was almost NO chance of flying on Standby today. UGGH. We hopped in a rental car and made the 8 hr drive. We just got here about 2 hours ago but we are here. It is so nice to all be together again and we are now on the last days of this chapter.

Thats it....hope you got all the info :) Keep praying for us. We appreciate everyone's support.

Who is Silver Point, TN Person?

Ok, So this is driving me crazy because this person checks the blog almost daily? Who are you? I have A LOT of people from all sorts of places checking/reading the blog but anyone can access it, it is no longer considered "private," so I know that this Silver Point, TN is someone who knows us. I googled "Silver Point" and I have no clue to where this town in located. Please let me know :)

Tuesday's Update

Todd saw Dr. Malyapa today and he told him that we were officially almost done! YEAH!!! Of course, we knew that! He told him that we would more than likely not have to travel back to Jacksonville for follow-ups and that Dr. Wiseman-Neurologist here-could do them and then conference him in. The first scan would be done about 4-6 weeks after treatment and then a final scan at 8 weeks. Dr. Malyapa said that usually on the first scan there is no sign of change but the second scan is where most results are seen. Can't we just fast forward to the last scan? LOL.

Then he talked about Todd returning to work, which was originally scheduled for the 24th of March-less than a week after treatment ends. He told Todd that he would need more time to get himself back to normal. Apparently the protons still function for up to 6 weeks after treatment. Meaning that fatigue would still be very present. We are going to talk about this and look over a calendar this weekend. I definitely don't want him to rush. He needs to be feeling 100%-or close-before heading back to work.

All in all, things are on the downward slope. I am looking so forward to closing this chapter. Thanks to everyone who is saying a prayer. Keep it up!!!

Todd in Jacksonville

Todd made it back to Jacksonville late last night. He told me the drive was long from Orlando-close to 2hrs. I think with him being tired, it made his vision a little shaky and therefore making the drive more challenging.

His appointment is bright and early this morning-6:40. He told me that once he talked to Dr. Malyapa, he would call me and give me an update. We are on the last full week!!! His last treatment is on next Tuesday. I am sure Dr. Malyapa will start talking about the "end" very soon.

Tyler and I are flying this weekend to go get him. We are leaving *hopefully* on Friday-using buddy passes again. Since this will be our last weekend in Florida, I think we are going to try and make it a fun one!

On that note, I don't think we will be doing any partying. Todd still does not have the stamina or any extra energy. I offered to get him hooked up on some golf for Saturday and he turned me down saying he still didn't feel like he could golf 18 holes. You know that if Todd turns down golf, then he still isn't 100%. I am hoping that once he is home and well rested that he will be able to go back to work the first week of April. Thanks for care and concern.

Home together

We are all together this weekend. Today is snowing so we are going to have a very LAZY day. I do have to work this evening so I think Todd is going to hang out with his brother. Tomorrow is another Lazy day for us. He has been home for less than 15 hours and we have already watched 3 full movies...LOL. Will update on Monday or Tuesday when he sees the doctor. Have a great weekend.

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

All is well!!!

Since Todd was put back on the steroids, all is well. Today, Tuesday, he was up and about and said he was tired of sitting in the condo so he ventured out for lunch and a haircut. He needed to get a haircut because he noticed a patch of hair missing where the treatment is administered. Since he wears it so short, I don't think the hair loss will be much of an issue.

Other than that, he comes home for the weekend. It will be a very short trip but at least he will be home. If anything changes, I will update immediately.

Saturday, March 1, 2008

Today-Saturday was a better day

1 full day of the steroids and Todd is feeling much better. He managed to eat today and get out of bed. He said that he still felt tired and was planning on doing nothing the rest of the weekend-like he does anything anyways....LOL. Thanks for everyone's concern but he is feeling almost back to his old self.

A shout out to the Powell Baseball Moms

I just wanted to say THANKS to these ladies for their care and concern-I haven't had a chance to individually email them. Tyler used to play baseball with their sons and it has been just about a year since I have seen them. Even though a bunch of time has passed, each one of them has reached out to say Hello and and offer support. Todd has even received cards from them!!! Glad to know that they are still around. Thanks guys! Give me a call when you all have a mom's night out.

Not a good day for Todd

Well, he has been off the steroids for a 1 1/2 days and today was not a good day. When I spoke with him yesterday, he said he wasn't feeling all that great. Today though after treatment, he came home and went straight to bed. I called him several times and each time he sounded worse and worse. I started to get concerned this evening when he told me he really hasn't eaten and he hasn't gotten out of bed. I called later, around 8pm and he told me he was throwing up several times-poor guy! He did tell me that he called the center and spoke with the on call dr and he told Todd to get back on the steroids. Apparently that steroid is used in a lot of chemo patients to help with nausea. So, here we go again. I would rather him be grouchy then sick and miserable.

I called Todd and told him that I could be there tomorrow, Saturday, but he told me to stay home with Tyler this weekend. I feel bad that we are so far away and can not help him in any way. Although the girls at work reminded me that sometimes when you are sick, you would rather be alone. I just feel bad for him-it sucks to be sick and not at home!!!

Say a extra prayer tonight for him and that he feels better this weekend. Take care.

Wednesday and Thursday

Not sure what day number it is because the center had to reschedule 2 of Todd's appointments. Anyways, Todd met with Dr. Malyapa on Wednesday and he told Todd that Wednesday was the half way point-I thought we had already reached that! Anyways, he Dr. Malyapa took Todd off the steroids. He told Todd that he noticed that he face with swollen, due to the steroids. He also said that him and Todd would talk frequently and if he was feeling bad then maybe they would start back on the steroids again. Who knows

I spoke with Todd today and he told me that he was feeling the worst that he has felt since he started on the treatment. I asked how he was feeling and he said "Tired, upset stomach, and headache." He thinks it was because he came off the steroids. What is he to do? Feel bad on the drugs or feel bad off the drugs? He told me that if he continues to feel this way thru the weekend then he would ask to be put back on them on Monday.

I thought about rearranging my work schedule this weekend and surprising him on Saturday but I think it is best not to take Tyler out of school any extra days next week. If he seems to be feeling crappy, I might take off by myself and leave Tyler at Greg and Angie's for Monday/Tuesday. I haven't told them that yet, but we will see-I can't leave Todd there all by himself to feel sick. Not sure what I am going to do.

Tyler had major life meltdown on Wednesday night and Thursday morning before school. I kept asking what was wrong and he kept saying "I'm frustrated." We went up and snuggled in bed and talked. In the end, he told me that he was ready for Daddy to come home. The guy has been such a trooper in all of this and I guess it was time for him to let it all out. He did tell me that he has been meeting with the Guidance Counselor at school weekly just to talk about "life." I am so glad that the school has been supportive of us. Speaking of school, We went to a roller skating event tonight and I ran into a mom that I knew. She asked about Todd and told me that her son told her that Tyler's dad went to Florida to have surgery on his head and have part of his brain removed......cute. It made me chuckle a little because that is how a 7 year old interpreted things.

I will update again on Saturday or so. Keep Todd in your prayers that he gets feeling better!!!

The begin of week 4

I think anyways...LOL. Wow, the time has really flown by! Todd made it back to Jacksonville very easily yesterday-Monday. He took the 6 am flight and was in Florida by 10 am. I can't believe how easy it was for him.

I have talked to him several times today and he was incredibly tired. I think he took a few cat naps. He told me he felt like it was because he had 2 treatment with in 12 hours of each other. Dr. Malyapa was already gone last night and had some scheduling issues this morning so they told Todd that he would meet with him tomorrow. I sure hope he takes him off the steroids!!!

Nothing else is new, I feel like I am telling everyone the same things every day but I know many of you like to hear the daily updates. We are so blessed to have friends and family this concerned-Thanks!!!

Everyday Question

My everyday question from EVERYONE is "How is Todd feeling?" The answer is: Tired, Grouchy, Tired, and more Grouchy. He is on a steroid that sets his mood off very quickly. I think he has had road rage too...LOL I know that this will all be over soon and he will be back to his ole self-nice and laid back.

I think he rested well this weekend so that is good. Hopefully, he can get back into his routine by Tuesday and get his life settled back down. All 3 of us have been on the go with him since last Thursday so maybe some boredom would be good.

Thanks for everyone asking, we greatly appreciate it!

The weekend has come to an end.

Todd will be flying back to Jacksonville tomorrow morning. Once again, he is flying standby. I just went to Delta website and all morning flights are full so.....he is going to try and catch the 6 am flight. He is going to take the car to the airport and then my good friend Amy will take me to get the car-what a rig-a-ma-roo. Luckily, I am off tomorrow and have NOTHING to do. Todd's treatment is the last appointment of the day and it will be at 10:45 PM.

I will update more on Tuesday after his appointment with Dr. Malyapa. Thanks everyone!!! Keep praying.

All of us are home together for a few days!!!

Tyler and I made it home-finally-on Wednesday. It took several full flights but we finally arrived around 1pm. Tyler went to daycare and I went to work. Today, Thursday, Todd had his appointment at 6:40 and then went straight to the airport. The first flight was full but he made it on the second flight. The one to Knoxville only had 1 left seat-some one was on our side! Yippee!!! The center is closed tomorrow for Admin day and his appointment was changed on Monday to 10:45 PM, yes that late. So, I think he will have a nice long weekend at home!

We are all home together for the next few nights. The dogs, especially Levi is so happy to see him. He has not left his side! Tonight, we are going to be lazy and do our usual Thursday night things....pj's on by 7:30, Survivor at 8 and Apprentice at 9. LOL. Can't wait. Todd is excited about sleeping in his own bed. I do have to work all weekend so I think Todd will spend a lot of time with his brother, Greg. I know that they are getting together on Saturday to watch the UT vs. Memphis basketball game.

Thats it for now. A shout out to everyone who has been on our sides and saying prayers. I/We have received lots of cards and some gifts. So thanks to everyone!!!

Our St. Augustine visit

On Monday, We took Tyler to the Nations oldest city for a history lesson :). We stopped by the outlets on the way and then we ran over to see Todd's friend, Randy. We told Randy that we were taking Tyler to see the Fort and he gave us free passes to ride the train. The Red Train took us around the entire city of St. Augustine and gave us the history and showed us the important landmarks of the city. We all enjoyed the ride very much. I was amazed at what I learned. This train ride was 1 1/2 hours long and I kept asking Tyler if he was bored and he kept saying "No", he actually said he like hearing about the "stuff" LOL.
I created a slide show of some of our pictures-I think there are 15 or so pictures, the landmarks were beautiful and old....The picture of the big tree is a 600 yr old tree. It sits in front of the Fountain of Youth. What a great time we had on our trip to St. Augustine-Thanks Randy!!!

Todd's Address

Here it is again:

Todd Bloomfield

Jacksonville, FL 32202

I want to thank EVERYONE who has sent me or Todd a card. We greatly appreciate it.

Here we go again.

Well, here we go again. Tyler and I *tried* to catch a flight out of Jacksonville today. Actually we tried for 4 flights and all were booked going to Atlanta and Cincinnati. I finally put our name on the 7:50 pm flight but my friend who got us the buddy passes just called and said for us not even to go because the flight before has 63 people on stand-by and those people will overflow to the 7:50 flight. We will attempt to catch the 6 am flight to Atlanta in the morning and then run home, change clothes, drop Tyler off to school and then go to work. What a long day tomorrow is going to be for the 2 of us. Tyler has been an EXCELLENT travel companion.

Lesson learned, don't travel on buddy passes during holiday weekends or major sporting events-Daytona 500.I guess now, I can upload lots of pictures to the blog and work on that this evening.

Tyler did have STREP.

After a long and very boring weekend-the doctor from the Minute Clinic(on Monday) called said that his test that was sent off came back positive for strep. You could definitely tell that he was not himself on Saturday-we tried to go to the 2008 Car show. He made it about 1 hr before saying he felt bad. Then again on Sunday, he was very slow moving till around 5 pm. We went out to dinner and he said he was feeling better. Monday rolled around and he felt like a new child. We went to St. Augustine for the day-post and pics to come

So between Saturday and Sunday, we did not get out of our pj's till around 3 each day and we rented 4 movies, all which stunk! What a boring weekend but now we are all very well rested. :)

Day 11 and 12

Day 11: Bright and early-6:40 am-Todd made it to his appointment. Tyler and I did not go. On Monday, he spoke with Dr. Malyapa about his sleeping issues. He has not been sleeping or getting up around 4 AM and the blame is on the steroid he was taking. Dr. Malyapa took him off the evening dose and told him to see if that would work. Other than that, things went well.

Day 12: Todd did not take the steroid pill last night and he slept great, or better! Treatment went well as usual.

The patch is 100% gone. Well, he lost it but he still has not had the need to use it. Hopefully, something is working in there! Keep praying.

Anyone can leave comments now.

I changed the settings so that anyone can leave comments. Before you had to have a blogger account. Just wanted to let everyone know.

Day 8, 9 and 10

Day 9 was cancelled because they were having trouble getting the proton beams into the gantry-whatever that means. So Todd made 3 separate trips to the center. Now this will push us into the next week. They will not do 2 treatments in one day on him. Day 10, which was Friday was his first 6:40 appointment. He said it was early but it went faster as he did not have to wait as long.

This week Todd spoke with 2 other pituitary Brain Tumor patients. One was a lady was about his age and had a rather large tumor that was behind and pushing on her optic nerves. Her physicians removed a large part but did not get all of it, she had another surgery to get the rest. Now her tumor is starting to spread to her brainstem. She is more than 1/2 way done with proton therapy. The other person was a 50+ year old man, he has a pituitary tumor behind his optic nerves/eyes as well. I am glad that Todd is starting to talk to other people-it is nice to know he is not alone.

All patients go on about the treatment that they have received from the staff at the Proton Center. I am so thankful that these people understand. It makes it easier to leave each week.

We made it to Jacksonville, finally.

What a long few days. We left very quickly after school on Thursday to *try* and catch an earlier flight out of Knoxville. We had no problems getting out of Knoxville but when we reached Atlanta we found out that there were NO flights going anywhere in Florida that had open seats. Apparently it is the Daytona 500, Bike Week, some Hawaiian festival and Presidents Day Week and people are trying to get into Florida. Tyler and I put our name on the stand-by list for the last 3 flights but we were numbers 45 and 46. LOL. We finally ended the night by going to the Best Western. We fell asleep around 12 and woke up at 4:30 so we could try and make the 7 am flight. We made the flight and were in Jacksonville by 8:30 am. Glad to be here

About 3 hrs being here, Tyler complained of having a sore throat-many of you know he is prone to Strep. Just to be safe, we found a Minute Clinic. She tested him for Strep and it came back negative so that is good. We took it easy the rest of the night but in the middle of the night he was up again saying he did not feel well. Another long night. Just letting everyone know that Tyler and I made it. I will give an update on Todd in the next post.

Happy Valentine's Day

Todd sent me Tulips today at work. It was so nice to get flowers!!! Tyler and I really miss the guy and can not wait to get to Florida tomorrow night. Happy Valentines Day early to everyone. I hope that everyone can be with the one's they love. Appreciate those moments.

Thought Tyler would like Spongebob.

Day 8

All is still well with Todd and the Proton Therapy. The patch is still 1/2 way around. Today they gave him a new appointment time of 6:40 AM starting Friday. Yikes, that is too early for me. He said that he is OK with it because of the steroid he is on it seems to wake him up around 5. His thought was he could come back and rest. That way maybe he would have more energy in the afternoon. We will see. I know, Tyler and I will not be joining him for his morning treatment!

Tyler and I are going to try and catch the last flight out of Knoxville on Thursday evening, if not, we will take a flight on Friday morning. We are flying on stand-by so you never know. We will be there thru Tuesday. I will definitely keep everyone posted. Keep praying.

Day 6 and 7...

Well, the patch is 1/2 way back. Todd needed it for the weekend and Monday but he told me today that he did not use it. Who knows, one day at a time! Yesterdays and todays treatment went well. After yesterdays appointment, Dr. Malyapa wanted to touch base with him. He showed Todd the map of his brain and exactly where they are shooting the protons. Todd said it was pretty cool. Dr. Malyapa said all was going expected-what does that really mean?! He also told Todd to try and wear a bucket style type of hat to protect the back of his head and neck. HEHE. I can not see Todd wearing this type hat. He told me that he would start wearing his ballcaps backwards.

I have had sooo much great feedback on the blog! I am glad that people are reading it. I had several customers that have become friends stop by today just to "check" in. It has also allowed me to reconnect with friends that I/we have not spoken to in awhile. Todd told me tonight that I have more support than he does. I told him it is because I have FRIENDS!!! Of course, he said that jokingly.

Well, I had intended this to be a long post with pictures but I am a little behind so I will keep doing the daily updates and then in the "spare" time I will work on the pictures post. Thanks everyone for caring.

Check Back

I have been working on a post tonight and it is taking me a while to get it together. I am putting in lots of pics and updating everyone on who is who. I will try and finish tomorrow before I go to work. Thanks for checking! Oh by the way, things went well on Monday and Tuesday for treatment.

The Map

I love looking at the Map on the bottom of the blog to see where everyone is coming from. So, I do not know who my California person is.....Mystery. Would love to know who you are so please leave a comment!!! I am updating close to every day and will post again on Monday after Todd's treatment. Keep praying!

Day 4 and 5 of 30

So both days went well. I was excited to hear from Todd that he did not have to wear his eye patch on the way to the center on Thursday (To drive, he has had to wear an eye patch no matter where he goes) AND then he called yesterday while I was at work to tell me he did not wear his eye patch at all on the drive. You could tell that he was excited but I told him not to get his hopes up too much but that I was very excited for him!

Today is Saturday and I spoke to him this morning. He is going to meet a friend, Randy for lunch. Randy works for VF based out of the St. Augustine store. I was super happy to hear he was going to be seeing someone. I was afraid that this would be a long boring weekend for him.

Keep praying for him and us.

Day 3 of 30

So Tyler and I left today. I *think* I have him pretty set up for the next 7 days. I got the pantry stocked with the foods he likes-he just needs to get fresh veggies and fruits, I signed him up for a mail service on his PS3 games-so he does not have to drive to Blockbuster and left emergency contact numbers at the concierge desk.

Today's treatment was the same-the big black hole. I believe he is starting to slow down and get more tired but he has plenty of free time to relax. I probably will not post for a few days unless something changes. Tyler and I are going to fly out on Friday the 14-thanks to my friend Haven who has given us 2 buddy passes for this trip-roundtrip from Knoxville to Jacksonville. Much nicer to fly direct!!!!

Day 2 of 30

Today went "Easy Breasy" at Todd put it. We got to the center about 45 min early and just sat around. I realized that I am very thankful for our situation because there are people a lot worse off than Todd. I saw the "good, the bad and the ugly" while sitting there. At one point, I had to get up and refocus because I felt the tears coming soon. On the brighter side, there were many men-older men-waiting on their prostate treatment and they were just as happy as larks.

So the proton center is a facility meant for prostate cancers, lung cancers and head/neck cancers. While we were sitting there I said to Todd "I think some of these people could be our grandparents!" Everyone there today was 75+ years old. LOL. I don't see Todd finding a buddy in that group but you never know.

After treatment, Tyler and I went to the Museum of Science and History-MOSH. We had a good time. Todd wanted to rest so we left him alone for 3 hrs-I think he enjoyed the quiet time. The neat part of our trip was that we took the Water Taxi. What a cool concept and Tyler thought it was cool. The water taxi took us across the river right to the museum. Best part about it was that we got on the taxi right in the "backyard" of the complex. I have a few cool pics that I will have to upload so stayed tuned!

I leave tomorrow and I kinda worry a little bit. I mostly worry about him driving as his vision is not so great. I think the parking garage is going to be a big challenge. Todd assured me that he won't be "roaming" the city. I talked to my mom tonight and she assured me that he will be fine as he had been doing normal activities for months. I will stop by the concierge desk in the morning and leave them my numbers-just in case. Keep praying.

Day 1 of 30

Today was day 1 and it went really well. Todd said it was like going into a big hole which he called the Abyss. They had his head strapped down by the keflar (sp) mask that was molded to his face and attached to a board. Then his mouth was in a mouth piece which was attached to the mask. Bottom line, he could not move his head or jaw. The process took all of 30 min and he said it really was not too bad.

Today he has been a little loopy and tired. Tyler has been running around like a wild monkey so I have tried to keep him occupied. We went swimming, went for a walk along the riverfront and did some shopping. Hopefully once we are gone, he can relax and watch life go by. I did walk in on him napping, which is very unusual, so I know that he is not feeling his best.

All in all, it went well and he has 29 more to go. Keep us in your prayers!

WOW, What a gift!!!

I received an unbelievable gift from work the other day. For those of you who know my friend, Susan or who Tyler calls Crazy Susan, she wanted to start a "money" drive to get a $100 gas card. Well, she called all my mall friends, Amy and her parents just to say she wanted to give us a gas gift card. Well, this was started on last Sunday and she told me that the first person who donated gave enough to cover the gas card-at that point she said "oh, I need a bigger goal." Well, by the middle of the week she had raised as she calls "10 gas cards" and she still had people telling her they were going to give. Long of the short, She was a proud momma as she gave me a huge pile of cash and a homemade card with everyones name who had contributed. There were 37 people who gave and the amount was more than I could have ever expected. All she expected in return was a hug, lol. (I am not a hugger).

Thank you to everyone who gave to us. The money will definitely be put to good use. Also, thanks for caring about us.

Almost ready to go...

Well, we will be leaving-Sunday 3rd-in the morning and it seems that there is a lot of "stuff" to get ready. Just trying to get "life" wrapped up for Todd seems to be the hard part. Today he is not feeling all that great, I have noticed that he is off balance a lot and that is because of the double vision. Also, he is incredibly grouchy but Tyler and I just go with the flow.

Many people have come to my side to help with any changes the next few weeks. Lots of dinner invites and many people will be taken up on them, especially the neighbors. Glad to know that we have friends! 6 weeks will go by so fast with us traveling to and from.

Lastly everyone keeps asking me (and Tyler) if we are OK and I keep saying "YES." It makes this transition easier knowing that Todd is excited about getting Proton Therapy. I asked him the other night if he was nervous and he said "No" that he was more excited because he was hoping that by shrinking or eliminating the tumor it would help him feel better. I guess we don't understand how it feels to feel crappy everyday. Everyone, please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we travel tomorrow and he has his first treatment on Monday at 10:45.

I will be setting up a separate email addy for Todd within the next few days but until then you can either leave comments or respond to our home email address. Also, I will post his address again for those that want to send a letter or card. I am sure he would love to hear some encouraging words. Todd Bloomfield, 400 East Bay Street Suite 603, Jacksonville, Fl 32202. I will update everyone on Monday to how the first session went.

Lots More Info. Resources

Our case manager and social worker from the proton center told me to call the American Cancer society. ACS. From there a lady told me about housing assistance, travel assistance and other general info. It was a wealth of knowledge! I am in the process of applying for a grant thru the brain tumor society. brain tumor society. There is also another organization called Cancer care that does grants as well so please keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer, we need all the assistance we can get!!!

I had a YIKES moment as I realized the expense of transportation. The ACS said that they would give a $100 gas card and then I found Angel Flights Angel Flight. I will be giving them a call on Monday because they will help arrange flights to and from destination at no charge. Lastly, my friend from the Gap works for Delta and she has given us 2 "buddy passes". Those passes will allow Tyler and I to take a long weekend to spend with Todd. I plan on listing all the valuable resources that I have found because you never know when someone else might be put in the same situation. Stayed tuned!

Now What? All the planning!

So, Todd's start date is on February 4th, which is less than 2 weeks away. I was overwhelmed with all the planning and preparation. Not only that but it was alot of MONEY that had to be spent and quickly.

We had to find housing first and foremost. I called all the recommendations from the Proton Center and the cheapest I found for a 1 bedroom, fully furnished apartment was 3200 for 6 weeks. HOLY COW!!! I probably called close to 75 people and we finally found a 1 bedroom condo on the water in downtown Jacksonville. It is called the Plaza and according to the lady it is the only 5 star Condo in Jacksonville. The amenities are super nice so I can't wait to see it.

Here is a blurb from the website: Berkman Plaza is a luxury riverfront complex Located along the St. Johns River on 400 E. Bay Street, this 22-story, 198-unit high-rise tower, has many amenities, including a swimming pool and a private parking garage with rooftop tennis courts, sun deck and gardens. The community features Mediterranean architecture and lush landscaping. The Plaza Condominiums also offer other amenities, such as 24-hour concierge service, a fitness center and spa, a business center with meeting facilities and an indoor squash court. The tower's grand lobby also includes a gourmet grocery, a 2100-square-foot Daryl Powers Salon & Day Spa, and a DeLuxe Cleaners.

How Todd found the Proton Center...

On our last visit to Dr. Wisemans-Todd's neurologist, he told us about the Florida Proton Center in Jacksonville. We left the office and didn't speak another word of it, that was on Tuesday. On Saturday the 13th, Todd handed me an email from the Proton Center. Todd told me he was interested in seeing if there was anything they could do for him. We gathered LOTS of information and on Monday (15th) we overnighted a pack. By Wednesday, we had an appointment on Tuesday the 23rd.

We loaded the family up an went to Jacksonville for a "short" visit. Our appointment was on Tuesday with Dr. Malyapa. He told us that Todd was an Excellent candidate for the proton therapy. The best information was that he thought and the overall goal was to get rid of the tumor, not just shrink it! Exciting News!!!

Proton Therapy is kinda like radiation but does not destroy all the cells surrounding the tumor. Here is the link to the center. Proton Center

New Years Week 08

We made another trip to Orlando to go to the Tennessee Vols football game. This year we took Tyler and decided to make it a mini vacation. Our dear friends-Steve and Christy Klimowski were gracious to let us stay with them and they toted us around. We had such a good time staying with them.

On New Years Eve, Todd and Steve played golf-in the rain, and Christy, myself and the kids-Heather and Tyler went to Gatorland. We had a blast. It was very educational and yet fun at the same time. New Years Day was spent being tried and true VOLUNTEER fans. Tyler's joy and expressions were priceless as we made our way to the stadium and he saw the field. We had excellent seats and the VOLS won!!!

The last day of our action packed mini-trip was spent at Disney World. I was not sure how Todd would do with all the walking so I did my research and found out they do Guest Assistance passes-we waited in NO lines and the pass allowed us to go in on the Fast pass side. In addition, we rented him a motorized scooter. I think it was one of the busiest days at Disney World (2nd) not to mention the coldest-they reported record lows and we all had to layer just to stay warm. We did a character breakfast at Ohana's first, did all the highlights at the Magic Kingdom, went to Epcot, did the highlights there and then we made the trip to MGM. Tyler has been wanting to ride Rockin Roller Coaster for months but was not tall enough so we crossed our fingers and hoped the he would reach the height requirements. Unfortunately, he still was not tall enough and that was a blow to the 7 year olds ego! So...after spending 13 hrs at Disney World we were finally done. We had a blast!!! Don't forget to look at some of our pictures.

First Post

Hello...I am new to this so bear with me thru the next few posts. I will eventually get the hang of it.
