Lots More Info. Resources

Our case manager and social worker from the proton center told me to call the American Cancer society. ACS. From there a lady told me about housing assistance, travel assistance and other general info. It was a wealth of knowledge! I am in the process of applying for a grant thru the brain tumor society. brain tumor society. There is also another organization called Cancer care that does grants as well so please keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer, we need all the assistance we can get!!!

I had a YIKES moment as I realized the expense of transportation. The ACS said that they would give a $100 gas card and then I found Angel Flights Angel Flight. I will be giving them a call on Monday because they will help arrange flights to and from destination at no charge. Lastly, my friend from the Gap works for Delta and she has given us 2 "buddy passes". Those passes will allow Tyler and I to take a long weekend to spend with Todd. I plan on listing all the valuable resources that I have found because you never know when someone else might be put in the same situation. Stayed tuned!

Now What? All the planning!

So, Todd's start date is on February 4th, which is less than 2 weeks away. I was overwhelmed with all the planning and preparation. Not only that but it was alot of MONEY that had to be spent and quickly.

We had to find housing first and foremost. I called all the recommendations from the Proton Center and the cheapest I found for a 1 bedroom, fully furnished apartment was 3200 for 6 weeks. HOLY COW!!! I probably called close to 75 people and we finally found a 1 bedroom condo on the water in downtown Jacksonville. It is called the Plaza and according to the lady it is the only 5 star Condo in Jacksonville. The amenities are super nice so I can't wait to see it.

Here is a blurb from the website: Berkman Plaza is a luxury riverfront complex Located along the St. Johns River on 400 E. Bay Street, this 22-story, 198-unit high-rise tower, has many amenities, including a swimming pool and a private parking garage with rooftop tennis courts, sun deck and gardens. The community features Mediterranean architecture and lush landscaping. The Plaza Condominiums also offer other amenities, such as 24-hour concierge service, a fitness center and spa, a business center with meeting facilities and an indoor squash court. The tower's grand lobby also includes a gourmet grocery, a 2100-square-foot Daryl Powers Salon & Day Spa, and a DeLuxe Cleaners.

How Todd found the Proton Center...

On our last visit to Dr. Wisemans-Todd's neurologist, he told us about the Florida Proton Center in Jacksonville. We left the office and didn't speak another word of it, that was on Tuesday. On Saturday the 13th, Todd handed me an email from the Proton Center. Todd told me he was interested in seeing if there was anything they could do for him. We gathered LOTS of information and on Monday (15th) we overnighted a pack. By Wednesday, we had an appointment on Tuesday the 23rd.

We loaded the family up an went to Jacksonville for a "short" visit. Our appointment was on Tuesday with Dr. Malyapa. He told us that Todd was an Excellent candidate for the proton therapy. The best information was that he thought and the overall goal was to get rid of the tumor, not just shrink it! Exciting News!!!

Proton Therapy is kinda like radiation but does not destroy all the cells surrounding the tumor. Here is the link to the center. Proton Center

New Years Week 08

We made another trip to Orlando to go to the Tennessee Vols football game. This year we took Tyler and decided to make it a mini vacation. Our dear friends-Steve and Christy Klimowski were gracious to let us stay with them and they toted us around. We had such a good time staying with them.

On New Years Eve, Todd and Steve played golf-in the rain, and Christy, myself and the kids-Heather and Tyler went to Gatorland. We had a blast. It was very educational and yet fun at the same time. New Years Day was spent being tried and true VOLUNTEER fans. Tyler's joy and expressions were priceless as we made our way to the stadium and he saw the field. We had excellent seats and the VOLS won!!!

The last day of our action packed mini-trip was spent at Disney World. I was not sure how Todd would do with all the walking so I did my research and found out they do Guest Assistance passes-we waited in NO lines and the pass allowed us to go in on the Fast pass side. In addition, we rented him a motorized scooter. I think it was one of the busiest days at Disney World (2nd) not to mention the coldest-they reported record lows and we all had to layer just to stay warm. We did a character breakfast at Ohana's first, did all the highlights at the Magic Kingdom, went to Epcot, did the highlights there and then we made the trip to MGM. Tyler has been wanting to ride Rockin Roller Coaster for months but was not tall enough so we crossed our fingers and hoped the he would reach the height requirements. Unfortunately, he still was not tall enough and that was a blow to the 7 year olds ego! So...after spending 13 hrs at Disney World we were finally done. We had a blast!!! Don't forget to look at some of our pictures.
